PUNJAB SPORTS DEPARTMENT

Revenue Head:

The state of Punjab has always enjoyed a pre-eminent position in the field of Sports. To retain its pristine glory in the realm of sports, an independent Department of Sports was created in the year 1975.

The Department is running various schemes to groom the young and budding players of the state. A brief note regarding the schemes and achievements of the Deptt., are as below:-

 1. Establishment of Sports Wings in selected Schools/Colleges:-

To groom the talented players of the state, the Department has established Sports Wings in selected schools and colleges of the state. They are provided free training, sports equipment, sports Kit daily diet. The residential players are provided diet @ Rs. 200/- and Day-Scholar @ Rs. 100/- per day per head.

  2.  Coaching and Competition scheme:-

To examine the performance of players, competitions play a very important role. The Deptt. conducts competitions at District and State level every year. Approximately 1.00 lac players participate in these competitions. The Deptt. Organizes 15 days coaching camp for the players through State Sports Associations in Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior categories prior to participation in National Championships. Besides free training, sports equipment and lodging facilities, they are also provided diet @ Rs. 200/- for residential players and Rs. 100/- per head per day for Day-Scholars. 

 3.    Provision of sports equipment:-

The sports equipment being costly is out of reach of sportsmen. The purchase of equipment is imperative to provide training to young boys girls in different disciplines and prepare them for National and International Competitions. Two types of sports equipment (consumable Non-consumable).

 4.   Cash Incentives:-

Department of Sports, Govt. of Punjab has framed a ‘Cash Award Policy’ to encourage sportspersons to excel at State, National International level.

  5.   Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award:-

The Department of Sports confers upon state’s highest sports award, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award to eminent sportspersons of the state. The Award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2.00 lacs, a scroll and a statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

 6.  Pensions:- 

Monthly pension amounting  to Rs. 15000/- per month is given to Veteran Sportspersons, who had won medals in Olympics and Rs. 7500/- per month is given to medal winners of Asian and Commonwealth Games (held once in a 4 years), World Championship (held once  in a 4 years) and Rs. 5000/- per month is given to National Game Medal winner who have won atleast two medals in last five National Games by the Punjab State Sports Council.

7.    Provision of Sports Infrastructure :-

The Department provides State-of the-Art Sports Infrastructure to the players of the state.

 8.    Punjab State Institute of Sports:-

Punjab State Institute of Sports has been setup with its headquarters at Hockey Stadium Sector 63 SAS Nagar. Centres of Excellence in different games have started in various places of Punjab.

  9. Recruitment of Coaches:-

The department has recently recruited 167 Coaches. In addition 169 Coaches are working with department through an outsourcing firm.
